By The Ian Potter Foundation
It is with deep sadness that The Ian Potter Foundation's Governors and staff acknowledge the news of the passing of Professor Emma Johnston.
Professor Johnston joined The Ian Potter Foundation in September 2021 and made an extraordinary impact in a short time, particularly as Chair of the Foundation's Environment Committee. Her expertise and vision shaped the Foundation's environmental work, championing initiatives that will leave a lasting legacy.
During her tenure as a Governor, Emma was a passionate advocate for projects that strengthen Australia's response to environmental challenges. She advocated for supporting the establishment of the Biodiversity Council and providing ongoing funding for the Invasive Species Council and the Warddeken Indigenous Rangers project in the Northern Territory. Drawing on her background in marine science, Emma also guided the Foundation's current investment in marine conservation, including projects focused on the Great Southern Reef and local-to-global kelp restoration strategies.
Professor Johnston's energy, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to protecting our natural environment inspired all who worked with her. Her contributions will continue to shape conservation efforts for years to come.
Our thoughts are with Emma's husband, Sam; her children, Amelia and Antonin; and all of her family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
